This is a condition where there is compression of the median nerve which supplies sensation to the thumb, forefinger, middle finger and sometimes the thumbside of the ring finger. Sensation to the little finger and the outside of the ring finger are supplied by the ulnar nerve.
The median nerve passes through a tunnel formed by the bones of the wrist and a band of fibrous tissue as it passes from the wrist to the hand. It is here where it can become compressed, leading to the name carpal tunnely syndrome.
There can be pins and needles in the fingers and thumb, leading to numbness and pain which spreads up the forearm. It can come on as a result of repetitive strain, in pregnancy, diabetes, thyroid failure and rheumatoid arthritis, but often the cause is unknown.
