Green-lipped mussel

Green-lipped mussels are found in the oceans off New Zealand from which an extract is removed and used medicinally.

What it does

  1. Anti-inflammatory: Green-lipped mussel contains Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)which are natural substances found in the connective tissue of ligaments and joint cartilages. They help to preserve the connective tissue in the body as well as improve its regeneration process, joint cartilages included.
  2. Skin health: The Green Lipped Mussel, along with any organism living in the sea has connective tissue that is rich in GAGs, this has been scientifically tested, and shown to improve the elasticity and firmness of the skin as well as making it feel softer and silkier.

In supplement form, green-lipped mussel extract is available in tablet form or as a gel to apply topically.


People with shellfish allergy should consult a doctor before taking green-lipped mussel extracts.

Some people have reported mild side effects such as tummy upset or rashes when taking freeze dried green lipped mussel, which contains more of the proteins responsible for allergic reactions.

At the time of writing there were no well known negative drug interactions with Green lipped mussel extract.
