Meniere’s Disease

Meniere’s Disease is characterised by symptoms of vertigo, associated with deafness and tinnitus. Vertigo is an alarming sensation of movement. Usually the room appears to be spinning, or the ground may appear to tilt. It can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting.

Attacks of meniere’s can last for hours and are thought to be due to an increase in pressure of the fluid in the inner ear. Once an attack is over hearing returns to normal.

Attacks of meniere’s can be recurrent and in severe cases the sufferer may experience “drop attacks”, when without warning they fall to the ground.

Diet and Lifestyle Factors

Dietary changes to reduce mucous congestion, minimise fluid retention and improve blood flow to the hearing and balance mechanisms in the ear are essential.

Cut out dairy products and bananas, which are mucous forming.

Do not add salt to food.

Cut out tea and coffee and drink 2 litres of water daily.

Eat 5 to 7 portions of fruit and vegetables daily.

Eat oily fish 3 times a week.
