Otitis Media is infection of the middle ear. It is common in childhood and is usually associated with a cold. This causes the Eustachian tube to become blocked and leads to the secretions in the middle ear becoming infected. The increased pressure in the ear causes pain. The eardrum may perforate and the infected mucous discharge through the ear canal. When the drum perforates and the pressure is released, the pain disappears.
Repeated attacks of otitis media can lead to glue hear and loss of hearing. Herbs, supplements and natural remedies can help avoid the need for anti-biotics.
Nutritional Supplements that could help. (Refer to the individual supplement for cautions in use.)
|Supplement/Herb||What it does||Dosage|
|Echinacea||Enhances immune function by increasing the production of white blood cells and stimulating activation of white blood cells. It appears that echinacea is most effective taken at the onset of an infection. In long-term use many herbalists suggest that a 1-2 week break be taken every 8 weeks or so.||300-500mg daily during infection.|
|Vitamin A||The beneficial effect of vitamin A on maintaining function and secretions of the body’s mucosal tissue reduces the risk of the tissue becoming infected. Vitamin A is also essential for the health of the thymus gland (the master gland of the immune system).||As directed|
|Betacarotene||Converted by the body into Vitamin A.||as directed|
|Vitamin C||Supports the immune system and helps mucous membranes to heal.||1000mg 3 times daily|
|Bioflavonoids||Support the action of Vitamin C, anti-oxidant, anti-histamine and reduce inflammation.||as directed|
Diet and Lifestyle Factors
Eliminate any food allergies by doing a blood test for IgG anti-bodies. See Food Detective.
Dairy products are very mucous forming and should be avoided anyway.
Avoid refined carbohydrates, canned drinks and sugar which compromise the functioning of the immune system.
Use the natural sweetener Xylitol, which can help protect against earache as it forms a barrier that prevents bacteria infecting the linings of the mouth, throat, sinuses and Eustachian tube. Xylitol is also present in some toothapstes and chewing gum.
Eat 5 to 7 portions of fresh fruit and vegetables daily to support the immune system.
Eat good quality proteins and include oily fish 3 times a week.
