Quinsy is an abscess which lies behind the tonsil and against the pharyngeal wall. There may be swelling of the tonsil on the affected side, severe pain, fever and difficulty swallowing. It may be necessary to have the abscess surgically drained.
The most useful herbs are:
Sage, Rosemary and Echinacea. Use 2 teaspoons of fresh, chopped herb or 1 teaspoon of dried herb per cup of boiling water. Leave for 10 minutes to infuse then gargle with the infused herbs. Repeat every hour.
Tea tree can also be used as a gargle, using 3 drops to a glass of hot water.
Hot water with the juice of half a lemon and a dessertspoon of honey can be soothing. Take it 4 times daily.
Fresh pineapple and pineapple juice contain healing, anti-inflammatory enzymes and are particularly helpful. Try freezing a 50/50 mix of water and pineapple and suck on the cubes.
If you have repeated bouts of tonsillitis, see the section on Immune Support.
